Jacques Villon
(1875—1963)

Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp on July 31, 1875, was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Cubist movement. He was the elder brother of artists Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Suzanne Duchamp. He adopted the name Jacques Villon in the early 1900s, choosing “Jacques” as his first name and “Villon” in honor of the medieval French poet François Villon. Villon initially worked as a newspaper illustrator and printmaker before turning to painting. His early work was influenced by Impressionism, but he later developed a highly structured style influenced by Cubism. He exhibited alongside other leading avant-garde artists and was associated with the Puteaux Group, a circle of artists interested in Cubism and abstraction. His later paintings often featured landscapes, still lifes, and figures interpreted through carefully organized geometric forms. Villon died in his studio at Puteaux on June 9, 1963.

Villon's painting Paysage du Tarn et Garonne portrays the landscape of Tarn-et-Garonne, a department in southwestern France. Rather than presenting the scenery in a purely realistic manner, Villon organized the landscape into simplified forms characteristic of his Cubist-influenced style. Topical Stamp | Arts | Painting | Macario Vitalis

Macario Vitalis
(1898—1989)

Macario Vitalis was a Filipino modernist painter whose career was largely spent in France. He was born in Lapog (now San Juan), Ilocos Sur, on March 8, 1898. He left the Philippines for the United States in 1918 and later moved to Paris in 1925, where he became associated with the avant-garde artistic circles of Puteaux. His work was influenced by Cubism, Impressionism, and Pointillism, and he became particularly known for his colorful and expressive paintings of landscapes, village life, religious subjects, and people. He developed a strong connection with Brittany, where he lived and worked for many years. He maintained close ties with the Philippines and returned several times to exhibit his works. He eventually returned permanently to the Philippines in 1986 and died in Iligan City on June 8, 1989.

Vitalis' painting Bayanihan portrays the traditional Filipino spirit of community cooperation. He presents this distinctly Filipino theme through his modernist style, using simplified forms, strong lines, and vivid colors.
