Toym Imao
(1968–)

Toym Imao, born Abdulmari de Leon Imao Jr. in 1968, is a Filipino sculptor, multimedia visual artist, educator, and storyteller. He is known for creating historical monuments, large-scale installations, and contemporary artworks that explore Filipino identity, history, politics, social issues, and popular culture. He is the son of National Artist for Visual Arts Abdulmari Asia Imao and art collector Grace de Leon. He studied Architecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He currently serves as Dean of the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Fine Arts. Among his notable works is Desaparecidos (Memorializing Absence, Remembering the Disappeared), an installation exhibited at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani that commemorates the victims of forced disappearance and represents the grief and absence experienced by their families. Another notable work is Santa Sierra Madre, also known as Our Lady of BRP Sierra Madre, which personifies the grounded Philippine Navy outpost at Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea as a symbolic protector of Philippine sovereignty amid maritime tensions with China. His historical monuments include the Andres Bonifacio National Shrine in Maragondon, Cavite; the Dr. Jose P. Rizal statue in Carson City, California; and the Tandang Sora National Shrine. Through these works, Imao combines historical commemoration with contemporary artistic expression and social commentary.

The Tandang Sora National Shrine, officially known as Dambana ni Melchora Aquino, by Toym Imao is located along Banlat Road in Barangay Tandang Sora, Quezon City. It marks the birthplace, former homestead, and final resting place of Melchora "Tandang Sora" Aquino, revered as the "Mother of the Philippine Revolution".
